Strait of Hormuz disruptions push Myanmar rice farmers to the brink

Shipping restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz are compounding an already severe humanitarian crisis in Myanmar, where farmers are struggling to afford fuel and fertiliser. Farmers report that 50-kilogram bags of fertiliser are now five times more expensive than before March, while the country imports 90 percent of its fuel and up to 95 percent of its chemical fertilisers from the Gulf.
The World Food Programme warns Myanmar could see a 50 percent drop in fertiliser use, potentially cutting farming output by 15 percent. More than 90,000 people have been killed and nearly four million displaced since the military coup in 2021.
