Estcourt Lootings | Uneasy calm in the town following mayhem and looting

Foreign nationals in Escourt say harassment and intimidation have escalated against them after ten of their shops were looted.

The looting came after a group of foreign shop owners obtained an interim court order against Inkosi Langabilalele municipal mayor Mdudusi Myezwa and the municipality, to allow them to trade lawfully.

The court heard that municipal officials took away the keys of foreign-owned shops a day after a march against illegal foreign nationals at the end of April.

In early May, the mayor told a delegation of foreign national shop owners that they had 21 days to leave the town.
