Poland–U.K. treaty a new boost for NATO | Col. Ray Wojcik (ret)

The United States has for weeks been signaling a reduced level of engagement in Europe, with priorities shifting toward the Western Hemisphere, the Asia-Pacific region, and the Middle East.

At the same time, conflicting messages have emerged. On the one hand, there are plans to scale back troops in Europe, and then on the other, there are discussions about deploying additional soldiers to Poland.

“Both things can be true at the same time,” says Col. Ray Wojcik, Senior Research Fellow at the Saratoga Foundation, on World Talks. In his view, NATO is currently going through a transitional period, one that could benefit Poland as a strong regional partner.

At the same time, the number of bilateral agreements is growing, such as the one between the U.K. and Poland. “Such agreements have existed for many years and are a natural development,” Wojcik adds.
