China: The most urgent issue is to maintain the ceasefire

Fu Cong, China's permanent representative to the United Nations, said on Friday that maintaining the Iran war ceasefire was an urgent necessity and that the Strait of Hormuz needed to be reopened as quickly as possible.

Fu told reporters at the United Nations that China was very concerned about recent remarks suggesting the ceasefire was temporary and that another round of attacks was needed.

"Iran needs to lift its restrictions on the Strait of Hormuz, and the US needs to lift its naval blockade," he said. "The most urgent issue is to keep the ceasefire. And the ceasefire needs to last, and there has to be a good-faith negotiation between the two sides," he said.

Fu was speaking at the start of the month-long Chinese presidency of the UN Security Council.
