Increasing reliance on social grants in SA

Reliance on social grants in South Africa has grown substantially in recent years. This was one of the issues highlighted by Stats SA as it released the General Household Survey for 2025. The survey noted good progress in the increase of access to early learning childhood facilities, while the number of matriculants also increased.

However, when it came to engaging in the economy, it found that the percentage of young people in the 15 to 24 age bracket not in employment, education and training, was just above 58-percent.

In terms of service delivery to households, inequalities remain with the survey showing that while 84-point-9 percent of urban households received regular basic services, only 13 percent of rural households received the same. Nompumelelo Siziba has more.
