Bingata, the Okinawan art of fabric dyeing, has been prized since the days of the Ryukyu Kingdom (15th-19th century). However, in the closing days of the Pacific War it came close to being lost forever. It was saved by the head of the Shiroma Bingata Studio. Today, his grandson continues to keep the tradition alive.
