South Africa's foot-and-mouth outbreak deepens amid slow government vaccine rollout

South Africa is experiencing one of its worst outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease, with cases confirmed across all nine provinces affecting cattle, sheep and pigs. Farmers blame a slow government vaccination drive, partly caused by a halt in vaccine imports from Botswana in November last year. By the end of April, only around 2.5 million of 14 million animals had been vaccinated. The outbreak has cost the industry an estimated $108m and triggered export restrictions, disrupting beef and dairy production.
