Some ‘optimism’ in negotiations as Iran, US ‘soften’ positions: Analysis

Andrea Dessi, an assistant professor in international relations and global politics at the American University of Rome, says the US-Iran negotiations are still very “fluid” and not close to a breakthrough.

“But at the same time, I think there’s some optimism in the sense that there is movement, there is some softening of positions both on the side of Iran … but also with regards to the United States side,” Dessi told Al Jazeera.

“We see some movement away from … certain red lines that the United States has been discussing for many decades or many years, the ballistic missiles, the proxies, and there’s more of a focus on trying to separate issues,” he said.

Despite the movement, Dessi explained, “we are by no means out of the woods yet”.

“We need to keep focus and hope that the backchannels and the mediators are continuing to push in the correct direction.”
