Mbeki says crime and jobs remain national issues

Former South African President Thabo Mbeki, says unemployment and crime in South Africa are genuine concerns, but warned that blaming foreign nationals for the country's economic challenges is misguided.

This follows the 16th Thabo Mbeki Annual Lecture which took place on Saturday.

The lecture focused on Africa and the world ahead of Africa Day that will be celebrated on Monday.

Speaking on tensions surrounding undocumented migrants, Mbeki noted that this issue was also raised by guest speaker, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, who pointed out that similar actions in other African countries, including Ghana and Nigeria, failed to address unemployment and instead weakened African unity and cooperation.
