South Africa anti-immigration protests: Locals want the government to tighten border security

South African cities are seeing renewed anti-immigrant protests, with demonstrators in Durban demanding tougher border controls and action against undocumented migrants amid high unemployment and crime.

Police have separated groups as foreign nationals were taken to the Department of Home Affairs for document checks; officials say only a small fraction of the hundreds processed lacked papers. Refugees, including from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, report being targeted regardless of legal status.

Xenophobic violence has historically spiked around electoral cycles, with local government polls due in November.
