Gauteng municipalities owe Eskom and Rand Water R30 billion in unpaid water and electricity bills

Gauteng municipalities owe a combined R30 billion in overdue payments to Eskom and Rand Water.

This has emerged on the final day of the South African Human Rights Commission's inquiry into Gauteng's water crisis.

The commission is probing whether municipalities are meeting their constitutional obligation to provide water to residents.

On Thursday, the scale of the debt was laid bare: Gauteng municipalities owe Rand Water R9 billion rand and Eskom R22 billion, with the City of Johannesburg alone owing Eskom R5.2 billion.
