Weather-related disasters | 'Early warning systems to save human lives must be improved'

The Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs has welcomed a further classification by the National Disaster Management Centre (NDMC) regarding the severe weather events that have continued to affect parts of the country.

The additional classification is specific to affected regions in the Western Cape, Free State, Eastern Cape and Northern Cape provinces following more severe weather systems that resulted in intensified impacts in these provinces

We are now joined by Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Velenkosini Hlabisa to discuss how the department is responding to weather-related disasters across the country, including the interventions being implemented, as well as his budget vote speech delivered on Wednesday.

The COGTA Minister also responded to the crisis surrounding outstanding debt owed by municipalties to Eskom
