Severe storms lashed the Western Cape which claimed 11 lives

One of the biggest and most destructive storms in decades hit the Western Cape last week. 11 people died.

There was severe flooding, strong wind with gusts of up 120 kilometres per hour, trees uprooted, roofs blown off and much more.

The storm hit the western part of the province the hardest and stretched over an area of nearly 400 kilometres.

Two of the largest agri sectors, wine and deciduous fruit, provides employment to hundreds of thousands of people - permanent, seasonal and in the value chain.

With 58-percent of all agri exports deriving from the Western Cape, agriculture is a major economic driver.

The provincial government's early estimates point towards damages running into billions of rands.
