Extreme heat grips India as temperatures near 50C

Millions across India are enduring extreme heat, with temperatures soaring to 46 degrees Celsius in some regions. Global studies estimate heat-related illnesses claim more than 150,000 lives in the country annually. The capital, New Delhi, has grown significantly hotter over the past decade due to rapid urbanisation, with temperatures rising nearly three degrees. Daily wage earners, including porters and rickshaw drivers, are particularly vulnerable, forced to work through scorching conditions with little access to relief. The city has just one government-run cooling centre for its 22.5 million residents, whilst hospitals report rising cases of heatstroke and heat-related cardiovascular problems.
