Ep.20 [K-PEOPLE] Minjoong Artist Hong Sung-dam

At dawn on May 18, 1980, as armed martial law troops entered Gwangju, Hong Sung-dam was a young artist who had just graduated from the Department of Fine Arts at Chosun University.
“It comes back to me. Not just May, but the faces of those who died suddenly come rushing over me.”
For Hong Sung-dam, a Minjoong artist, the grief and pain of surviving have remained an ongoing reality even after 46 years.
The May 18 Gwangju Democratization Movement, which he documented through prints and paintings, became a turning point in Korea’s democratic history, leading to the June Uprising of 1987, the Candlelight Revolution, and the December 3 Light Revolution.
This episode explores the artistic vision and body of work of Hong, who has confronted war and state violence through his art.

1980년 5월 18일 새벽 무장한 계엄군들이 광주로 진입할 당시, 조선대학교 미술학과를 갓 졸업한 청년 화가였던 홍성담.
“떠오릅니다. 오월만 아니라, 죽은 동료들의 얼굴이 저를 탁 덮칠 때가 있어요.”
살아남은 자의 슬픔과 고통이 46년이 지난 지금까지도 현재 진행형으로 지속되고 있는 홍성담 민중화가.
그가 판화와 그림으로 기록한 5·18 광주민주화운동은 87년 6월 항쟁, 촛불혁명, 12‧3 빛의 혁명으로 이어져 대한민국 민주주의 역사의 분수령이 되었다.
