A 91-year-old man was rescued after being trapped for nearly 11 hours under the rubble of his collapsed self-built house following a magnitude-5.2 earthquake in Liuzhou City, south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, officials said at a press conference on May 18.
Rescuers located the elderly man with the help of a search dog. After tapping to confirm his position, they first passed food and water through the gaps. Then they used an angle grinder to cut through the steel bars and a chainsaw to open the wooden boards, carving out a rescue passage. Finally, they carried the man out.
During the rescue, a magnitude-3.3 aftershock struck, but the operation went smoothly. The man was conscious with stable vital signs and was taken to the hospital for treatment.
According to the press conference, there are no longer any missing persons. The on-site search and rescue operation has basically concluded, shifting to the post-disaster recovery and reconstruction phase.
