Mnangagwa addresses proposed term extension Bill

Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa has, for the first time, publicly addressed the proposed Constitutional Amendment Bill Number 3.

The Bill seeks to extend his term of office from 2028 to 2030 and replace the current presidential popular vote system with a parliamentary ballot system.

The Bill was gazetted on February 16, triggering a 90-day public consultation process that concluded today, May 18.

According to Zimbabwe's Parliament, more than 300 000 written submissions were received, highlighting strong public interest and intensifying debate over the proposed constitutional reforms.

The process now shifts to Parliament's Portfolio Committee on Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs, which will examine and assess the submissions before the Bill is formally tabled for debate when Parliament reconvenes in early June.

The committee is expected to spend up to three weeks compiling its report for presentation to the National Assembly.
