Police launch investigation into death of suspected poaching kingpin

An investigation is underway after suspected rhino poaching kingpin Joseph "Big Joe" Nyalunga was shot and killed on Saturday.

The 62-year-old was allegedly ambushed by two armed men at his business premises in Mkhuhlu near Hazyview, in Mpumalanga.

Nyalunga is believed to have been a key figure in a major rhino poaching syndicate operating in the province, as well as in KwaZulu-Natal and Limpopo. He has been arrested and appeared in court multiple times since 2011.
