Talks to reopen the Long Island Railroad were ongoing into Sunday night between union leaders and New York government representatives, hoping to reopen the crucial commuter transport network ahead of the work week. The rail network has been shut down since May 16, after five of the railway's unions went on strike. These workers have been working to negotiate higher wages with the Metropolitan Transport Authority for years, with the Trump administration unsuccessfully getting involved in negotiations in September. After this series of failed talks, May 16 was the first day these workers could legally strike. If a deal is not reached soon, the US Congress could intervene to reopen the line.
