MFMA Report | Huge gaps in accountability systems in municipalities

National Treasury's latest Municipal Financial Management Act Compliance Report, covering the financial year July 2024 through to June 2025, points to mixed performance results.

Key findings show that the system of delegation had only been signed by 127 municipalities out of 257 and that fruitless, wasteful and irregular expenditure has accumulated to R268 billion.

Political Analyst Levy Ndou says there seems to be weak consequence management in local government structures.
