The latest Statistics South Africa's Quarterly Labour Force Survey indicates that over 8 million South Africans are unemployed.
The survey revealed that the official unemployment rate rose by 1,3% from 31, and 4-percent in the last quarter of 2025 to 32,7% in the first quarter of this year.
It also shows that young people continue to be the worst affected by the unemployment crisis in the country.
Unemployment rate among young people aged 15 to 24 stands at 60,9% and 40,6% among those aged 25 to 34.
The data further shows that the absorption and participation rates among young people continue to be lower than those of older adults.
To unpack this we are now joined by Sibabalwe Nobandla - Multimedia Strategist at Youth Capital and Director and Chief Economist of Econometrix, Dr Azar Jammine.
