State of Gauteng's finances with MEC Nkululeko Dunga

Gauteng Finance MEC, Nkululeko Dunga, has painted a worrying state of finances in the province with unauthorised spending patterns and Departments underspending their budgets. He delivered the provincial state of finances and strategic priority areas, announcing an urgent province-wide assessment of unpaid invoices and other unpaid accounts. As at the end of March 2026, total provincial accruals stood at approximately R9.3 billion. The province says it, too, has received a letter from the finance minister, threatening to stop the provincial equitable share allocation if it doesn't address billions in inter-governmental debt.
