Concerns over Gauteng's finances

Gauteng Finance MEC, Nkululeko Dunga, has revealed the worrying state of finances in the province, highlighting unauthorised spending and departments underspending their budgets.

He has delivered the provincial state of finances and strategic priority areas, announcing an urgent province-wide assessment of unpaid invoices and other unpaid accounts.

At the end of March 2026, total provincial accruals stood at approximately R9-point-3 billion.

The province says it has also received a letter from the finance minister, telling it to urgently address billions in inter-governmental debt.
