Chinese President Xi Jinping toasted to Donald Trump’s health and expressed hope for lasting ties between the US and China after delivering the opening remarks at a state banquet held at the Great Hall of the People on Thursday (May 14).
Xi recalled the then National Security Adviser Henry Kissinger’s trip to Beijing in 1971, which paved the way for President Richard Nixon’s historic 1972 visit to China. The visit laid the foundation for decades of ties and friendship between Beijing and Washington, Xi said in Mandarin.
During Trump’s speech, he highlighted the long relationship between the Chinese and American people, dating back to the founding of the United States. He also brought up how US founding father Benjamin Franklin was influenced by Confucius as well.
