Araghchi accuses Kuwait of boat attack, demands release of 4 citizens as analyst sees regional risk

Kuwait says it has arrested four men accused of belonging to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard after intercepting a fishing boat allegedly preparing hostile actions near a strategic island.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi condemned the arrests, accusing Kuwait of trying to “sow discord” and demanding the immediate release of the detainees.
In an interview with Al Jazeera, Dania Thafer, executive director of the Gulf International Forum, said the incident reflects growing Gulf security concerns during the regional conflict.
She said Gulf states have faced repeated attacks from Iranian-backed groups and warned that Kuwait has also uncovered alleged Iranian sleeper cells in the country.
Thafer argued the suspects were unlikely to be “innocent fishermen”, noting that a Kuwaiti security officer was reportedly injured during the operation.
Thafer added that Gulf countries are increasingly frustrated with US policy, believing their security concerns have taken second place to Israel’s, but said GCC states are still expected to maintain close ties with Washington while expanding defence partnerships with Europe, South Korea and Australia.
