Calbee packaging goes black and white

We have it in black and white — supply concerns are draining the colour from Calbee’s familiar snack packaging.

The Japanese snack giant says it’s cutting back to just two colours. Printing ink requires naphtha, an oil derivative that Japan imports from the Middle East, which accounts for about 40% of its supply.

The change affects 14 products, including potato chips and Frugra breakfast cereal, with the new packaging set to hit shelves from May 25.

When it comes to the crunch, it looks like even a bag of chips isn’t immune to global supply shocks.
