Professor Rayaz Malik at Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar has spent 25 years developing corneal confocal microscopy, a non-invasive eye imaging technique that detects conditions including dementia, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis and diabetic neuropathy.
The two-to-three-minute scan captures images of corneal nerve fibres, which AI algorithms analyse within seconds to identify nerve damage and predict disease risk.
Studies show the method can detect dementia at least three years before symptoms develop, and diabetic neuropathy five years in advance.
The technology offers early intervention opportunities for diseases currently diagnosed too late for effective treatment.
