China and the US remain the world's two most consequential powers – but they are moving in very different directions. China is doubling down on self-reliance, aiming to break through Western technological containment. The US, meanwhile, appears increasingly determined to preserve its global dominance, reasserting influence in the Western Hemisphere while treating energy security, from Venezuela to Iran, as a central pillar to geopolitical power. But despite mounting tensions across trade, technology, security, and diplomacy, both sides appear to be managing competition – carefully and, perhaps, uneasily. So, the real question is, can this uneasy balance last? How can Beijing and Washington avoid confrontation? And ultimately, is peaceful coexistence a realistic outcome or just wishful thinking?
