Negotiations aimed at ending the war between the US and Iran have reached a deadlock.
President Donald Trump has called Tehran's latest proposal “garbage” and is warning the ceasefire is on “massive life support.”
Iran’s parliamentary speaker, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, says the US has “no alternative” but to accept the rights of the Iranian people, as laid out in Tehran's 14-point proposal.
He's also warned that the country's armed forces are ready to respond to any US aggression.
Lorenzo Kamel, a professor of international relations at the University of Turin, says President Trump needs to resolve the crisis with Iran as the 2026 football World Cup and US midterm elections are fast approaching.
The US president wants an agreement more favourable than the Obama-era Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which will be “difficult” to achieve, an analyst says.
Trump’s fiery rhetoric also isn’t helping reach a deal with Iran, said Foad Izadi, an associate professor at the University of Tehran.
