Former Assad official faces historic trial over the Syrian revolution crackdown.

More than a decade after the Syrian revolution began, a former Assad-era official is facing a historic trial over allegations of torture, killings, and the violent suppression of protests in Daraa — the birthplace of the 2011 uprising.

The case centers on Atef Najib, a former security chief accused of ordering the detention and torture of teenage boys who allegedly wrote anti-government graffiti on a school wall. Their arrests and reported abuse helped ignite protests that later spread across Syria.

Victims and families say they have waited 15 years for justice.
