Debate on lack of transformation in legal profession

A fierce legal battle over transformation in South Africa's legal profession unfolded in the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria, where the Legal Practice Council is defending the Legal Sector Code against a challenge by some of the country's biggest law firms.

The National Association of Democratic Lawyers argues that despite decades of democracy, the legal profession still reflects the inequalities of South Africa's exclusionary past with white ownership and leadership continuing to dominate major firms and black women remaining severely underrepresented.

At the centre of the debate is a critical question: how should transformation in the legal profession be measured and enforced in modern South Africa?
