Security gaps leave Congolese civilians ‘completely vulnerable’ to rebel attacks: Amnesty

At least 69 people are now known to have killed in an attack in the northeastern Democratic Republic of Congo, last month.
Security officials say rebels from the CODECO group carried out the attack in Ituri province.
And that insecurity in the area delayed the recovery of bodies for several days.

The area has been gripped by years of violence between several armed groups competing for land and resources.
Fighters control large parts of the eastern DRC. including the city of Goma, which is held by the Rwandan-backed M23.

Rawya Rageh is a Senior Crisis Adviser for Amnesty International.
She says the Congolese government should do more to protect civilians.
