Putin’s muted victory day parade signals growing war pressure

Russia’s annual Victory Day celebration in Moscow looked dramatically different this year as President Vladimir Putin presided over a scaled-down military parade amid growing security concerns linked to the war in Ukraine.

No heavy military equipment rolled through Red Square, fireworks were cancelled, and public events across Victory Park were shut down due to fears of possible Ukrainian drone attacks. Instead, video displays showcased Russian military hardware currently being used on the Ukrainian frontlines.

During the ceremony, Putin compared Russia’s war in Ukraine to the Soviet Union’s fight during World War II and praised troops involved in the “special military operation.” North Korean troops reportedly involved in Russia’s Kursk operations also marched in the parade.

Meanwhile, Moscow and Kyiv agreed to a temporary 3-day ceasefire and prisoner exchange reportedly mediated by US President Donald Trump.
