The federal government has scrapped the plan to build a freight railway connecting Melbourne and Brisbane after updated modelling found it would cost over $45 billion against a budget allocation of $15 billion.
The under-construction segment of the track to Parkes will be completed, allowing trains to travel from Melbourne to the NSW Central West where the line junctions to Perth.
