Russia declares Victory Day ceasefire as Ukraine proposes broader truce

Russia's ongoing war in Ukraine is reshaping this year's Victory Day celebrations, raising doubts about a proposed ceasefire. Moscow has unilaterally declared a pause in fighting around the 9 May parade, traditionally a major display of military strength, and warned Ukraine of strikes on Kyiv if it does not comply. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has instead proposed a broader ceasefire, but both sides launched fresh attacks on energy and military infrastructure immediately after the announcements, suggesting escalation rather than a pause.
