Lebanon economic crisis deepens as Israel-Hezbollah war enters third month

The war between Hezbollah and Israel has displaced more than a million people in Lebanon and deepened an already dire economic crisis. Around 80 percent of the population was living in poverty before the latest Israeli assault, and the ongoing violence is pushing many further into destitution. Fuel prices have surged, raising the cost of transport, electricity and basic goods in a country that imports almost everything. The World Food Programme says food is now unaffordable for roughly one in four people, worsening the situation for families like Sandy Katanjian's, who struggles to pay rent on her husband's $600 monthly salary. Losses are estimated at $80m a day, excluding the damage from Israeli strikes.
