Asia faces dangerous heat surge as El Nino looms, says climate expert

Asia is bracing for more volatile weather as the prospect of strong El Nino conditions looms. The United Nations' weather agency said on Apr 24 that El Nino could develop between May and July, with early signs suggesting it may be particularly intense. The naturally occurring climate pattern disrupts winds, rainfall and temperatures worldwide. For Asia, the timing is critical, with concerns mounting over a potential spike in energy demand and crop damage, compounding existing energy pressures linked to the Middle East crisis. Mark Howden, founding director of the Australian National University’s Institute for Climate, Energy & Disaster Solutions, explains how El Nino could intensify heatwaves across the region, strain economies and public health systems.
