Hantavirus cases on cruise ship 'controllable' and unlikely to spread: Health expert

The World Health Organization is investigating a suspected hantavirus outbreak aboard the cruise ship MV Hondius, stranded off Cape Verde after being denied docking. Seven cases, including at least three deaths, have been confirmed, with nearly 150 passengers isolated on board. Speaking to CNA’s Asia Now, Amesh Adalja of the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security says the outbreak is “almost a one-off” and unlikely to pose a wider global threat. He notes that hantavirus typically spreads via rodents and not efficiently between humans, and is considered “controllable” -- unlike the highly transmissible COVID-19.
