Law firms challenge black employment targets in court

The legal battle in Gauteng North High court over the Legal Sector Code has opened a fierce debate about how to transform South Africa's legal profession. At the centre is the new Legal Sector Code, a binding B‑BBEE framework that sets transformation targets for law firms and advocates. The Black conveyancers association says the code is designed to make the right to equality real for black practitioners who remain on the margins of the profession.

Those who are opposing it, who are Solidarity Deneys-Reitz(previously known Norton Rose Fulbright), Webber Wentzel, Werkmans and Bowmans. Solidarity argues that the codes represent a dangerous form of racial intrusion into the legal profession.
