New SARS Commissioner outlines key priorities

Today marks the official first day in office for the new SARS Commissioner, Dr Johnstone Makhubu.

Makhubu takes over from Edward Kieswetter, whose seven year tenure is credited with rebuilding the revenue service, following the state capture era.

Makhubu hits the ground running on a five year contract, inheriting a momentum that saw SARS collect a record breaking two trillion rand in the last financial year.

But with a shifting economy and the ongoing fight against the illicit trade, the pressure is on to maintain those figures.
