World Press Freedom Day highlights rising dangers faced by journalists globally

On World Press Freedom Day, journalists in Gaza staged protests highlighting the dangers of reporting in conflict zones.
The Committee to Protect Journalists says at least 130 journalists were killed worldwide last year, many in war zones, with most cases going unpunished.
It estimates Israel was responsible for a significant share of those deaths, with Gaza recording the highest toll in a single conflict.
The Palestinian Journalists' Syndicate says more than 260 journalists have been killed in Gaza since October 2023.
Globally, more than 330 journalists are imprisoned and dozens remain missing or forcibly disappeared.
Speaking at the Vatican, Pope Leo XIV warned press freedom is often violated, both openly and covertly.
The UN says press freedom is facing its steepest decline in over a decade, with journalists calling for accountability and protection.
