AI vs. invasive salmon: Can tech save Norway's wild rivers?

Norway’s coastline is made up of extensive fjord and river systems. This breathtaking ecosystem is home to the Norwegian wild Atlantic salmon, but its population has dropped dramatically - 50% since the 1980s. And now there’s a fresh and growing threat. The pacific pink, or humpback, salmon.

RAZOR’s Neil Cairns travels to Norway to find out how dedicated groups of locals are going to huge lengths to protect their rivers. The Tana river in the far north of Norway is reckoned to be the best salmon river in Europe. Using traditional methods the locals, led by Roar Sandodden, have built a huge fish trap across the river to manually sort and remove the invasive pink salmon.

Other innovative high-tech solutions are being used in smaller rivers. Huawei, in collaboration with local partners like Berlevag Hunting and Fishing Association (BJFF), have developed an AI-based filtering system which uses underwater cameras, 5G connectivity, and solar power to identify fish species with 99% accuracy. #nature #technology #agriculture #fishing #salmon
