The place and role of workers' unions in SA

Trade Unions played a pivotal role in the liberation of South Africa and the establishment of workers rights as the democracy took shape in 1994. While there have been many gains, the workplace has changed in a number of ways over the last decade. Membership numbers of unions world wide saw a sharp decline after the COVID-19 pandemic, with job losses, among others, one of the main reasons.
Globally there is also a shift in the way people are employed with preference for short term contract and independent outsourcing.
