A superhuman feat to get the cockpit door open in a complete free fall, let alone while stabbed and nearly unconscious. If the pilot had done anything different, all would likely be dead. The choice to disengage with his attacker (leaving him briefly in control of the plane), in order to get the door open must have been an incredibly difficult choice to make but it proved to be the right one. Had he not, he likely would have died or lost consciousness and no one would have been able to enter the cockpit meaning almost certain death.
