Hey Matt, Is it possible to turn an old TV into a paper-like display for showing artworks or photos, without anyone realizing it is actually a TV displaying them (i.e., making it look like paper)?

For a project I need a transparent oled, but they are expensive af. With all the ideas I came up with, this is pretty much exactly what I was thinking too, using a projector to have localized backlighting for an lcd mod. But my plan failed because there’s no way I know of to have the blacks to be actually transparent, I’d need a programmable diffusion layer, with the same resolution as the screen… I think I need to wait for toled to become less expensive.

Im not sure how i missed this video, this is actually ingenious and even though i do have an oled for my PC this blew my mind . Im a hobby builder myself and while im extreme janky i have to give you absolutely top marks for creativity and sheer technical skill to pull this off. Sure its unsightly but its also basically free i would have never thought an LCD could look so good, you were 100% right about the fact that even being compared to oled as actually kind of insane

God damn I hate background music. Does YouTube automatically add background music to every video because it seems like its impossible to find a single video that doesn't subject us to this horrible background noise. Why can't I find any YouTuber who dares to be different.

Why not use some lenses to bring the projector closer to the LCD and have like a CRT TV box out of wood? (and fix the image with OBS in case it gets distorted by the lens). This way you don't fill the room with light and keep the awesome effect.
PS: I left this comment for future me, in case I finally get to start this project.

What if instead of the projector you use an other LED TV, maybe add more LEDs to the TV or maybe even remove the diffuser to get the most light possible to make up for the loss due to having 2 LCDs on top of each other.
@justanotheryoutubechannel
Looking back at this after a year, I had some thoughts. With one of those extra thin and bright UST projectors you can get nowadays, a lenticular screen, and an LCD panel like this, you could make a really incredible TV.

You’d project light onto the screen, then the lenticular screen would send light straight forwards into the LCD panel.

The question is just whether the cost and complexity would be worth it, given how impressive and expensive those UST projectors already are.

This is crazy!

To your note on "why did no one do this before", its because like with anything, TVs went through trends. After having of dealt with big, clunky box TVs, that when Flat screens became a thing, they became immensely popular as they were seen as sleek and easier to handle. (not to mention taking up less space)

I think the bigger problem was just the trends wouldn't allow for a thicker TV that had the ROOM for an extra bit of technology. Even if they had OBS or made their own in built software to do the same thing, very few people would buy it because it wasn't "Trendy" enough. Only recently have trends shifted from just flat TVs to wanting bigger, more accurate TVs but even then, most people are still just used to flat screens being the norm now.

great idea !
thank you.
@caspianmaclean8122
This looks great, but I don't understand why it is better than a projector by itself (apart from the resolution). The colour and contrast look great - why are they better than the projector? Why isn't the image as washed out by room lighting as using the projector directly?

I've thought of several possibilities, but haven't worked out the answer. If it's because the screen is darker, would projecting onto a darker wall be just as good - I doubt it but I don't know why. If it's because you're projecting onto a smaller area, would that be doable projecting onto the wall? Does the screen let light through from the back more easily than it reflects room light from the front?
@MikaelMurstam

With this solution you'll always be limited by the size of a TV's LCD screen. One problem you haven't mentioned is the delay between images, (TV vs projector) and the spherical distortion of the projector's zoom lens will also make alignment difficult, along with potential dimming issues with each color on the DLP projector's DMD chip, even though you've removed the color wheel.

I know this video is old but I thought you might want to know they did make a rear projection tv like you describe I owned one, the toshiba 46H84 and 51H84 series, Im sure there is more, that said Id rate it closer to a ips it looked really good but not as good as a normal rpcrt, its crazy how people justify new tv tech by outright dismissing crts, absolutely nothing is better than crt, with a large amount of processing inc hdr emulation the closest I have found is oled followed by ips but "stock" its vastly oversaturated but does produce true black, ips is far better and closer to a crt but lacks true black, due to this oled wins overall, maybe high end models are better because I can see oled having the potential and is the 1st tv tech to come close
CRTs have rich deep color, warmth and contrast that no tech since then has touched, its also more realistic and soft, everything after was and is way to sharp and glossy it messes significantly with lighting making the picture look fake, it can be mostly fixed however using a ips or oled with extreme processing or sometimes hdr content but out of the box nether are no where close to the quality of crts
I do love the video and was really cool but atleast over youtube it looked vastly better than what I have seen and honestly maybe even better than crt its the 1st time I have seen something "crt like" in quality still to glossy but sharp without artifacts and rich warmish picture, still not as good as crt in this way but in terms of detail it wins hands down
