If we are categorizing a tornado it should be based on the characteristics of the tornado, like we categorize hurricanes. That an E5 doesn't kill thousands is a mercy, not a reason to not document exactly what it was. Seems obvious but I'm sure there's the pride of ppl with degrees and money involved in the decision to do the opposite of common sense....

So, the EF scale is a practical one - it measures what a tornado is to the people on the ground, but there is no corresponding scientific scale which measures a tornado what its powers are by themselves? I guess to establsih such a scientific scale would entail lots of discussions which data to include in the scaling: pressure (drops), precipitation, wind speeds, diameter ... All of which are defining a twister, but which criteria is the one - or could they somehow find an mathematical way to combine those data to an effective scale? Still lots to do and my heart goes out to the people who do the dangerous task to understand twisters better.
That Samaras and others died in that tornado is tragic, but I guess they knew very well what risk they took in the first place. I had to think of Steve Irvin in 2006 - you have that kind of passion then you know your life's on the line. Knowing the risks doesn't make them go away. Nature has a way of doing things in an unexpected way - if our predictions of what will happen (will it turn right or left?) are wrong, it basically means, that we don't know enough yet. So again: My deepest respect for those that put their lives at risk to learn more about tornados.

I was a few miles away from this huge tornado. We had debris, bricks, insulation, 2x4 boards in our yard and street. I was in Spencer Oklahoma. The 4 of us went under the house in the crawl space. It was frightening! The destruction was immense! An apartment complex was severely damaged in Midwest City. I’m glad I’m in North Dakota now. We have occasional tornadoes but not like in Oklahoma and Tennessee. Two places I’ve lived. 😮

Regarding the EF scale - Roughly speaking, every approximate 25 - 30 mph increase in wind speed moves the tornado into the next 'upper' EF level, EF 5 the highest >200 mph.
The El Reno tornado would equate, again roughly, to an... EF 9
For comparison, the wind speed on Neptune would, roughly, be an... EF 53 😮😵😮😵

the EF scale HAS to be overhauled, it's so flawed in so many ways. A tiny twister should not be classified as an EF3 just because it hit the same structure over and over again, and a huge wedge like the El Reno should not be classified as an EF3 just because it didn't make its way toward a more populated area.
@auraearth-888
@@auraearth-8881 months ago
🌪 The terrifying part about El Reno isn’t just how powerful the tornado was — it’s how much we still didn’t understand while it was happening. A storm that looked almost impossible to predict, multiple vortices moving within the circulation, and winds so extreme they forced scientists to rethink how tornadoes are measured.

since tornadoes are measured by the amount of damage they cause, and America always wants to be the biggest and the bestest, they'll want the biggest and bestest tornadoes. My hypothesis is that they build their houses out of matchsticks in hopes of getting to an EF5 rating by letting the tornado do as much damage as possible.
