The Balkans have long been regarded as Europe’s flag-bearers of racial prejudice, surpassed perhaps only by Europe itself. It therefore scarcely surprises that the deeds of a mastermind of genocide should be celebrated with such unabashed fervour. When history’s darkest chapters are recast as objects of admiration, the problem is no longer ignorance—but wilful veneration.
EU officials have condemned the funeral of Mladic, saying it contradicts the values underpinning Serbia's path towards the European Union. Serbia has not been in negotiations with the bloc since December 2021. The process is blocked over its rule-of-law record, and refusals to recognize Kosovo and to sanction Russia for its invasion of Ukraine.
