Regarding the auto sector, one thing I do not hear mentioned is the fact that Canadian's purchase approximately 1.9M cars per year and produce only about 1.4M. Contrary to what trump says Canada is already a net importer of autos.
How do these pundits still not have a clue about how Canadian dairy supply management and the associated dairy tariffs actually work?!<br><br>Yes, there is a tiered tariff in Canada on US dairy that WE MIGHT CHOOSE TO BUY, which means that WE CANADIANS ARE PAYING THOSE TARIFFS.<br><br>But those tariffs don't actually go into effect until our dairy purchasers actually achieve a SPECIFIC QUOTA level.<br><br>What does that mean? It means that dairy purchasers don't pay any tariffs until a certain amount is purchased and imported.<br><br>And what's more is that WE HAVE NEVER ACTUALLY GOT TO THAT QUOTA!<br><br>So, while those tariffs DO exist, and CANADIANS will be the one who WOULD pay for them, we have never actually had to pay them since we've never imported enough to get there.<br><br>Why is that, you might ask? Because we manage our supply chain adequately enough to ensure that we generally provide for what we actually need and use, and we import what is required for any shortfalls, which there are, and for which we purchase. $1.3 BILLION US DOLLARS WORTH, as compared to only $432 MILLION US DOLLARS of purchases by the US of Canadian dairy. We're purchasing 3 times the volume from you that you are from us.<br><br>US Dairy Farmers are NOT being harmed by Canadian dairy tariffs. We already DO allow US dairy products into our supply chain!<br><br>That was at least until the current retaliatory tariffs were put in place as a response to the US Administration's tariffs.<br><br>Pundits need to educate themselves and not just parrot what is being said by the current US Administration.

Under the USMCA/CUSMA — an agreement negotiated and signed by Trump's own first administration — the U.S. was given a large amount of tariff-free access to the Canadian dairy market. The huge tariff only applies AFTER that quota is exceeded.<br><br>And here's the part that keeps getting left out. Look at how much of that tariff-free access the U.S. was actually using in 2024 - which is the HIGEST single year that the US has historically exported to Canada:<br><br>• Skim milk powder — 3%<br>• Yogurt/buttermilk — 12%<br>• Milk — 33%<br>• Cream — 51%<br>• Milk powder — 57%<br>• Butter/cream powder — 81%<br>• Cheese — 99%<br><br>Even cheese, the category that came closest, was still within its tariff-free quota.<br><br>You can't complain about 200%+ over-quota tariffs as though that's what you're being charged when most of the tariff-free access you negotiated isn't even being used.

The tariffs on Canada apply to basic inputs like metals, car parts, copper, aluminum and energy. So the size of our economy is irrelevant. These goods will effect a lot of manufactured goods in the states.

The negotiators almost had an agreement on trade until the Lutnik intervened and introduced conditions that would impact Canadian sovereignty. Canada is an independent sovereign country, we will accept any agreement that dictates which other countries we can trade with, or gives a foreign country control over our resources.. Not only don't I buy US products, my local radio station does not play US music! Canada will not kneel to a bully. Alberta is the least impacted province of all. The referendum in Alberta, about 30-35% are in favor at maximum. The prime minister of Alberta have been against countertarif from Canada since day 1. Besides 55-60% of Albertans were in favor for countertarifs compared to almost 80% in Quebec, and the average in Canada was roughly 70% which indicates that Alberta was less in favor to fight back than the rest of the country. Alberta is the only province that did not follow for the alcool ban (except Saskatchewan but they double the price of the US alcool instead).<br><br>There is no way that the decision taken by the federal in Canada was a decision to impeded on the referendum in Alberta. I suggest that you research the Dairy Tariff. YOU ARE TOTALLY WRONG. Canada uses a tariff-rate quota (TRQ) system within its supply management framework to allow limited duty-free dairy imports while charging massive over-quota tariffs between 200% and 300%. That being said, the USA has never even come close to meeting the quota. So NO tariffs are applied. My GOD!!! Do some homework people, it's no wonder everyone has issues with the media.

Now Canada is standing up for itself. Trump has imposed illegal tariffs on Canada since he took office in Jan. 2025. Canada was the first country to receive tariffs. All these tariffs were imposed even though Trump signed a trade agreement with Canada called USMCA in the USA and CUSMA in Canada. He signed it, yet now ignores it. And that referendum in Alberta is only to see if they should hold a referendum on separation. Only 20% of Albertans are for separation, but what they don't understand is that there are major Native land treaties signed before Alberta was a province that won't allow Alberta to separate.

I don't know why the US acts like dairy is such a big issue.. Canada's population is far smaller , yet they import far more dairy from the US than the US imports from Canada thanks to USMCA/CUSMA allowing it in tax free as long as it follows appropriate quality control aligned with Canadian standards. Higher tariffs like the ones talked about do not go into affect until they have exceeded their quota, which they haven't. The US isn't happy unless they are taking over all business of all kinds.

The dairy tariff only kicks in after a 0-tariff quota is exceeded. This has never happened. Trump wants to flood the Canadian market with cheap taxpayer-subsided hormone-filled milk because the US can't manage their own dairy surplus.
