American here - I worked for my local Hospice the last twelve years of a twenty year career. I am aware of the religious beliefs aspect but if people so against it saw the sometimes terrible terrible end of life pain and accommodating aspects Hospice workers routinely see they might reconsider. We put our pets we love out of their misery and pain that we love though when they can't bear it and it's time

There needs to be careful evaluation of each case but the reality is that there are far worse things that can happen to you in life than dying and once you come to terms with that it's no longer an issue.
