How ships climb 100 meters over the Three Gorges Dam

Ships can be lifted vertically more than 100 meters from downstream of the Three Gorges Dam to upstream via the Three Gorges Ship Lift, and vice versa. These "water elevators" allow significantly larger vessels to traverse the dam more quickly and in much greater numbers.

According to the Three Gorges Navigation Authority, the Three Gorges Project had handled a cumulative throughput of 100 million tonnes in 2026 as of August 13. #ChinaSeen
